Things I forgot to say in this video: Redundant playback isn't dead or unnecessary. When the stakes are much higher (TV, arenas, etc), redundant playback has it's place. But in my entire career I've never had a show I've built fail (or even break 5-6% CPU). Today's computers are exponentially more powerful than the ones that were running back in the day when computer playback wasn't as stable, ...

I found that he sells them on eBay and Reverb, so I ordered a pair. Check them ou...

Love this, brooo! Can we get more drum cams??
I’m working on it
EXCELLENT!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!
ON POINT!!! THANK YOU
Woooow! 😮 I will look for one
What?! No! But stop it though!
THIS IS INSANELY GOOD 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
🔥🔥🔥🔥 Woww!!!
You know how using a channel can do on the fly vocal processing? Can that be done using pluggins and effects for guitar tones instead of using midi patches on emulators/pedals. Essentially could this be done on multiple channels and not just for vocal processing on one channel. It’d be a game changer if a travel rig could just be narrowed down to just carrying mixer rack and a wireless rack
In theory it could be, but getting that down to a low/no-latency, stable setup would be a challenge.
Greetings from Lima Peru, I really admire your work and the information you provide, very good research. I have 3 questions. Please help 1.- What format do you use the ableton sessions in? in 48khz 24 bits or 44khz 16 bits?? I understand that recording them in the studio has to maintain all the quality in some cases 96khz 24 bits, but what is the configuration of the ableton session that you use for the live show? your mac is i7 or m2 or m3 Please help, the one you normally use your mac, how many GB 2.- An ableton session like the one in this video or the normal one you create, in terms of weight and space on the hard drive, how many GB of storage does it consume? 3.- The audio clips that you use as stems or multitrack for the show are already official in the live console recording or the originals are replaced in post production, For example, if you want to make a video clip of the live show, you use the ones recorded by the official multitrack console or then replace them with the original in post production.
1. 48khz, 24 or 16, but typically I use 24. 2. It really varies on how many songs and versions there are. Could be as little as 8-10GB or up to 60-80GB. Use an external SSD to keep read speeds as high as possible. 3. For a video, I typically grab a multitrack from the FOH board and mix it myself. There are other ways to do it, but I don’t ever replace the recorded stems with the original ones - it doesn’t achieve anything.
@@eldowns Wow!! THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION, For future concerts, on a Mac computer, what would be your recommendation? i7 16 ram? 1tb m3 1Tb mac mini? mac pro? m2 1Tb? macbook pro max etc etc 1.- what is your configuration? 2.- What would be your recommendation?
This is great!
I'm currently carrying a MotuAudioExpress with 4 Outputs (Click, Vocal Processing and Stereo Tracks) with me and already thought about using the usb interface of the m32c. What about latency? I heard that the ins/outs of the usb interface add a noticeable amount of delay / latency. Can you tell me more about it?
When it comes to latency, UAD is generally seen as the go-to because it has its own on-board processors, which keep latency to a minimum. That said, depending on the type of processing you’re doing, the power of your computer, and your settings, you may be able to get away with it with minimally noticeable latency. If you do decide to go this route, I strongly recommend splitting the vocal line before it hits the interface, that way you have a dry/non-latent signal for monitoring and backup.
Awesome work. Could you show us how you would create Program Changes and Control Changes for Kemper inside Ableton?
can you post the rest of the video from coffee cake!? these are awesome!!
that room exploded on the first hit! bro so good!
Thank you very much for this video. We know what to do now with compressors, limiter etc. But if we use eq,iamager,saturation..etc on master bus, when exporting stems,we will copy all these(eq.saturation, imager) to each stems?
You can put those on the Master as well, but no side chain necessary.
I could recognize that glowing A from anywhere.! Great performance!
Goosebumps😮
We need more drum cam!!!

Nice review! I'd wish it also were some kind of digital output like Dante or Madi on this thing too. But I guess you can't have everything unfortunately. How do you prefer splitting the signal for FOH and IEM ? I was thinking that as of today, I don't need more than 6 outputs for playback. I could split each channel like the same signal goes to say output 1 and 7, 2 and 8 etc. Else you will also need a splitter like Art S8 too I guess.
Yeah, digital would be weird to have alongside analog, but that’s definitely the next step for me. The outputs I use depends on the show, but I’m rarely below 8, so I’m generally not using it as a split for FOH and MON.
@@eldowns OK, so you are using a separate splitter as well?
@@runesig More often than not, the split is digital with FOH just pulling off of MON, but Ana analog split works as well.
@@eldowns Thanks!
imagine if this dropped on the radio in 85 😂 people would be so perplexed
This is Gold! You are bringing so much value to the world. Very grateful Eric :) Would you recommend sending, specifically the playback mix through L-R or Multi-Outs to FOH post following this process? (My apprehension with sending Multi Outs for playback is always that it ll do more harm than good (Risk Of Failure, More Lines More Variables, Intent of the Studio Mix not translating..) Thank you!
It depends. If you master your stems properly and are sending to an engineer who knows the music, then multi outs is better. If the engineer doesn’t know the music, it may be best to just use an LR so they can’t mess things up.
@@eldowns Thank you Eric! I hear you, When sending Multi Out would you recommend sending it like your Aux routed to available PHYSICAL OUTs (Bass-Perc-Pads..) or do something like a 4 Way Split like Subs - Low Mids - High Mids - Highs. Thank you!
@sarinsahil Split it based on stems. Absolutely do not split it based on frequency.
@@eldowns Thank you Eric! I agree. It would be amazing if you could a video on live vocal processing. For E.g If you were using a UAD Apollo x4 Unison (VOX MONO:Preamps, Compressor, De-Esser, Live Autotune) + (STEREO: Verbs, Dlys, Parallel Compression) in a live setting. Would you send three channels a) Mono Processed Vocals and b) L-R Stereo Processing to FOH so that the engineer can dial it in as required? Or do you recommend a different work flow? Thank you for sharing :)
@sarinsahil Introducing time-based FX without your engineer is a dangerous game to play, especially considering the inability to automate time/feedback/EQ/etc in UAD Console. That said, if you absolutely insist on doing it, yes, send the FX separate.
Thank you for making this video. I was waiting for it. A quick question about looping certain sections to keep the set dynamic let's say for audience interaction. Is it possible to automate going into predefined loops within the set, which one can get out of at just a click say from a MIDI controller. Thank you!
I’ll have a new video coming out shortly where I can cover that.
Wanted to add a shout for Evans EC2S heads - i bought a small, cheap Premier kit B-stock from Gear4Music to use in small venues and, after watching a few online comparison videos, put a full set of EC2Ss on them straight away. I love them, I get so many compliments about how that kit sounds. 👍🏻
Could be a dumb question, but: How do you manage the tracks play on stage? Just with the laptop space bar, or do you have any pad or foot switch?
Any and all of the above. You can control it directly, or use a pad or footswitch. Whatever you prefer.
@@eldowns For sure! But, I mean, what do you find more useful and easy to handle?
@@Inkgeniero On a small, simple show, keyboard is fine. On a more complex show, or one that involves redundancy, I use a pad. I’ll do a rig rundown on this tour.
@@eldowns Thanks a lot! I'll be waiting for it.
Great and easy to understand video. What options for individual iem doest that setup have?
This is an insanely outdated video. Watch Episode 5 for more up to date info.
Dope video! Been following you from the playback rig series. Question here. How do you automate the BPM? Is not a headache whenever you change the setlist order?
Good question. The tempo is automated via the Tempo automation lane on the Master channel. It’s actually not a pain in the ass when you re-order things - you just click on the Song title marker and hit Cmd+Shft+X, which cuts time, then Cmd+Shft+V to paste it elsewhere. Everything include automation comes with it.
@@eldowns Thanks a lot! I'll try.
Man you're giving away absolute gold! Thank you for that!
Great and informative video. I’ve done quite a few things wrong this whole time. This all makes total sense now Thank you dude!!
Not sure if you' see this and this is a general question kind of; if I'm bouncing the individual tracks in a production session with no mixing, should i bounce the tracks at all the same volume level? Example: Kick: -6db Hats: -6db Claps: -6db or should I just volume mix them before the actual mixing session and set them at different levels, depending on how they sit in the basic mix? Example; Kick: -6db Hats: -15 db Clap: -13 db Fx: -20 db? Hope this makes sense, thanks!
See my latest video on stem mastering!
Are there any alternatives?
For redundant playback? No, not really.
You’re a wizard thank you!
F####k this good
nice rig man! I'm super interested to hear about FOH integration with this setup. Doesn't look like you have any tails / splits built into the rig? ... Is it normal for gigs you show up at to have FOH just drop you PA tails for your M32? ... Or is there enough compatibility to ethernet out to a FOH board? What if their on a different console?
If the house console is compatible, you could feasibly just network it. Another simple solution is to just carry another M32C and network that to front of house. In this case, the operation had a very tight budget, so we mixed the living daylights out of the set, then send a Left/Right/Sub out to the house console and mix the show off of an iPad. Worked like a charm.
Great video! Thank you so much for clarifying this topic!
Brilliant, finally a solution. Brilliant video!
Thank BRO❤
Man, I love that ride kill on the 1. Edit: Fun commemoration - I got the notification for the Drumeo 2023 awards starting while watching this video. 👍
Sounded great at the end! Just proves time and time again that expensive heads > expensive drums.
Unfortunately the PA12 is officially noted as discontinued on the IConnectivity website. Such a bummer
I think it’s for the best.
@@eldowns interesting! I'm curious why your opinion has changed since making this video?
@rustonfettig It hasn’t really. The 1U is the better interface for the vast majority of people - just think the video reflects this, no?
@@eldowns23:25 in your video you comment that the PA12 isn't dead and still has a very significant use case.
@rustonfettig I suppose, but prior to that, I said that the PA1U is the best choice for the vast majority of people. The PA12’s use case may be significant, but it’s very specific.
Love the video and the small playback rig history overview at the start. I would love to see a 2U too, with the connections (and more like more MIDI din ports, adat, bnc) the back. That locking IEC (preferable with the small metal outside lock, so you can use regular cables) would be great too. Usb A to C cables added can still be handy if you are running out of C ports. I would probably still make a patch panel to keep the connectors safe and to add more options.
AMAZING VIDEO! Thank you so much for this. I'm having a hard time translating this to pro tools. I did the mix bounces easily enough since i had no processing on the master channel. Now that I have those stems in the mastering session all ext inputs are mono for side chain. How does this work? I also have the non affected two track bounce as a target. Like I said, I'm just finding it hard to get the last portion done through pro tools.
I’m not sure I’m completely following here. Sorry, I’m kind of Pro Tools dumb.

I just converted an old school 90's era Mapex Mars Series maple shell 4pc kit to electric. Packed them with furniture graded foam. Using Ddrum Redshot triggers. Remo silent stroke heads. As someone currently embarking on a DIY A2E drum conversion adventure? Who's using an old midi 5-dim Roland TD-6V module? This technology legitimately just cooked my noodle a bit! LMAO!!! 🙃
Hi Eric Thanks for the video. Does the EQ stays as is ? If yes we would get a sound closer to the mastered version but not identical I guess. Thank you.
I’m not sure I understand the question.
yoo! been looking for a vid like this! you smashed it! had a few questions: currently about to build a new session, very basic no playaudio or click yet(for experimental electronic solo project) i was planning on using session view in order to have clips triggered differently and ability to add/remix songs over eachother. in arrangement/or session how do you change the arrangement so quickly w/out messing up the session?assuming everything is locked on to the master tempo automation? i also run a master group for stems that has an fx rack that i can control via midi fighter but it has to be locked into tempo to trigger in time. (FX RACK - vocoder, delay, reverb, eq(high, mid, lows, filters) very Fourtet/Fred again adjacent. thanks for the help!!
Yeah, everything is tempo automated, so it’s just basic copying, pasting, duplicating. Nice and easy.
Thanks Eric, the last couple rigs didn’t seem to include redundancy? why is that at this professional touring level? Is it a cost thing, or something else?
It’s a combination of a few factors, but it mainly came down to complexity:benefit as well as risk. With these particular tours. The production was simple - no extra systems like lighting relying on playback. People also vastly overestimate how much audiences care about errors. Unless it’s at arena level, many times they can even be parlayed into moments of connection and humility. Pair that with the fact that I’ve never had a session that I’ve built fail and this led me to the decision that redundancy wasn’t necessary. It would’ve just been adding layers of complexity and points of failure that add nothing to the show. Now, that said, as stakes get higher, I do think it’s important to incorporate redundancy. But for me, the ends need to justify the means.
I hate clear drums. I bought a first generation Ludwig Vistalite kit back when they were first released (yes, I'm an old guy). It was horrible! The bearing edges cut the heads. I kept it for 6 months. I still hate plastic drums.
What do you think about this one sounds?
Dude great video…thanks so much! As a part of your rig, what files are you storing on that external drive? Also I wonder how many songs you could have in one show without bogging down the computer. Thanks again!
I prefer to keep all files on the internal - just make sure the internal has enough free space on it! I don’t like keeping files on externals because you’re dealing with a potential failure or limitation point. My sets tend to not exceed ~20-30 songs, but I’ve seen sets upwards of 50+ that run fine. If you use AbleSet, it supports multi session switching, so you can segment your sets and keep them light (if that’s a concern!).
